Bartel Grassland
Bartel Grassland is a 585-acre prairie and wetland restoration project that is sustained through a partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC), Audubon-Chicago Region, OpenLands, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Thorn Creek Audubon Society and the Bartel Grassland Volunteers.
Spring finds as many as 18 shorebird species at Bartel, summer brings bobolinks and other grassland birds, and in the winter short-eared owls and other raptors rule. A recently-completed report on the last 10 years of restoration assures us we are on the right track.
We welcome more volunteers to help us keep the weeds under control, find and plant native species - and enjoy the beauty!
